Building Sustainable Energy Systems (2001)

This book provides insight into how Swedish energy systems have evolved over three decades at the end of last century. Twenty-five Swedish experts contributed their views on energy strategies, programs, policies, and technology responses applied in Sweden. The volume is aimed at a broad international audience concerned with building a sustainable energy future. The major objective was to extract lessons that can help us meet future challenges in the context of increasing globalization, structural changes, and climate change.

Bioenergy – Realizing the Potential (2005)

Modern bioenergy has gained increased attention in the past decade. Not only does it provide an effective option for the provision of energy services from the technical point of view, but it is based on resources that can be utilized on a sustainable basis all around the globe. In addition, the benefits accrued go beyond energy provision, creating unique opportunities for regional development. Today, biomass is seen as one of the most promising renewable sources of modern energy services in the medium term. Know-how and experiences from different countries pave the way to further development of bioenergy systems.Bioenergy: Realising the Potential integrates the key technical, policy and economic issues surrounding bioenergy projects in industrialised and developing countries, with a critical focus on four major topics:

• The biomass resource availability and potential
• The institutions and markets development
• Technical and economic enhancements
• Successful examples from Europe and developing countries

Financing Renewable Energy Projects (1997)

Issues are examined which affect the success of a renewable energy financing programme, both with regard to financing and on a technical level: those interested in setting up financing schemes for renewable energy technologies must also be aware of the technical parameters, which can then be factored into any scheme. Photovoltaics is chosen as the main example, as one of the most cost-effective ways of bringing electricity to remote areas. Many of the examples and the financing issues discussed are also applicable to other renewable energy technologies. Chapters discuss: renewable energy technologies; costs and economics; dissemination issues; role of institutions; financing mechanisms; source of funds; implementing a revolving fund; parameters for setting up a financing scheme; project checklist; and case studies (from Kenya, Sri Lanka, Congo, Indonesia, and Dominica).
