Fuel options for public bus fleets in Sweden

Sweden has set an ambitious goal for a fossil-free vehicle fleet in 2030, a vital step toward the country’s CO2-emissions neutral target by 2050. The public transport sector has an important role in achieving the 2030 fossil-free vehicle fleet goal. The public transport sector has set a target to run 90% of the total vehicle kilometers of the fleet on biofuels by 2020. The focus of this study is the adoption of carbon-neutral fuels in public buses. Bus is the most common means of public transport in Sweden. Passenger boardings on buses comprised 52% of the total number of boardings in public transport in 2013, and bus transport services are offered by all counties of Sweden. Thus achieving the goals on biofuel deployment for the bus fleet is of paramount importance for reaching the overall goal of a fossil-free vehicle fleet. Actions are needed to increase the use of biofuels in Swedish buses all over the country.

INSISTs (Indonesian-Swedish Initiative for Sustainable Energy Solutions)

INSISTs (Indonesian-Swedish Initiative for Sustainable Energy Solutions) bioenergy program is a joint energy program developed between Sweden and Indonesia. The program aims at defining bioenergy pathways that link immediate action to long-term results, thus generating sustainable development, and benefits at global, national, and local levels. The research carried out within the program proposes recommendations to formulate roadmaps outlining strategies for different bioenergy segments. The research shows how biofuels can contribute significantly towards meeting Indonesia’s renewable energy target for 2025. Supply and demand forces and the catalytic component of innovative technology in both short and long-term scenarios are explored. On the resource side, crops and residues are considered. On the demand side, markets for food, biofuels, and electricity become the main focus. International demand is highlighted when appropriate. Respective actors for bioenergy development are discussed in the definition of strategies and implementation of action plans.

Chemical recycling for a circular economy

Chemical recycling is considered an attractive technological pathway for reducing waste and greenhouse gas emissions, as well as promoting circular economy. This project assesses chemical recycling technologies available and identifies the most suitable for recycling of household plastic waste. A Technology Readiness Level (TRL) assessment for eight technologies based on the stage of their present development is presented. The analysis provides timely information as policymakers and developers set targets for recycling, and contemplate investments in research and chemical plastic recovering plants.

Energy efficiency and emissions reductions in the steel industry

Indicators are needed to monitor energy efficiency improvements and greenhouse gas emissions in the iron and steel industry. Traditional indicators do not reflect the structural organisation of the sector and can be misleading. This project investigates how indicators for the steel industry can be improved to capture the achievements of Swedish industries.
